Day 1

17th June 2023

Dieppe to Gisors

Distance: 67 miles / 108km

Climb: 2,375ft / 724m

Total Distance Cycled: 242 miles / 389km

Our ride today started with a short but steep climb out of Dieppe before joining the Avenue Verte – a cycle path along a disused railway line – which we followed for some 25 miles, all the way to Forges-Les-Eaux. From here we cycled southeast across Normandy from village to village as far as Gisor.

An early start for myself, Geoff and Julia and the miles were easy, picturesque and by our standards, relatively fast. We were thrilled that none of our group had passed us before our first of a few very welcome refreshment stops of the day.

Travelling much of our route on the traffic free, smooth tarmac of the Avenue Vert was a welcome contrast from the busy, potholed roads we had cycled in recent days. Cycling alongside small villages, poppy fields and the occasional chateau, the route was scenic and soothing.

From mid morning onwards we cycled with many of our team mates, the groups chatting and laughing like old friends.

A long but sociable 108km done in good time, good spirits and good company, not forgetting, a blistering 32 degrees. Arriving at our hotel, we meet Jim and Denise from Calgary which makes our group complete.

A fun dinner followed at The Olive Vert in Gisors, where laughter and wine flowed as we refuelled and celebrated that Gary Shaughnessy a team member had just been awarded a CBE for services to business and charities. A well deserved award for a truly inspirational man.

Cheers!

  1. Brilliant – a great start. Brings back memories of cycling holidays where to get to see, hear and smell so much.
