The Long Grind
Lewiston to Winchester 42 miles / 4,265ft climb
To use a football euphemism, today was a game of two halves. The initial ride out of Lewiston was along Snake River complete with prairie dogs, through Hells Canyon State Park and then along a quiet interstate road.
Our luck changed when we started to climb and encountered a gravel path with steep descents not for the faint hearted. Not the cycling surface of choice! After a hairy descent, we found ourselves on the I-95. In general the traffic was courteous and the road not too busy. We had a fab lunch out of the ‘truck’ (thanks Jim & Denise).

For dessert, a fairly consistent 6% incline over about 12 miles. We had a little cloud cover which was fortunate but unless you have an affinity for hills, most cyclists would find this a challenge. Alison attacked the hill with great gusto initially but not unexpectedly began to flag towards the top.
Fortunately, with some gentle encouragement, a few pit stops, we arrived in Winchester with the most beautiful state park and lake to welcome us.

Great photos again! love to you all xx
Massive kudos to you all. Looks amazing. Loving the blog. Would loved to have joined you – did think about it briefly until Becky tore 2 of her 3 hamstrings skiing. Love and fair winds to you all. Simon xx
That is a solid amount of climbing for a day including a 6% gradient for 12 miles. Alpine, well done all. 👏
