Cycle Across America – Day 19

Lochsa Lodge to Lolo

44 miles / 1756ft climb

Another lovely day, a long climb up and over the Lolo Pass, not nearly as tough as it looked when we drove it yesterday. There’s a strange optical illusion on many of these mountains where the road ahead appears to be going downhill despite my legs and my Garmin clearly telling me I’m going uphill!

It was certainly not easy this morning but not as hard as I had anticipated in my head. I’m hoping it’s in part because we are getting fitter. There’s definitely some learning to be had here but that’s for another blog.

A visit to the Visitor’s Centre at the top of the Pass, a hearty lunch at the hot springs. A fast, fun downhill and (for me) a record breaking fast 25 mile ride to our hotel in Lolo. We meet up with Paula, Julia, Marianne and Steve and the ten of us have a lively, lovely evening out before our first day cycling together tomorrow.

  1. Another great day and now you have a team of ten to share turns on the front. Of course, the smartest and most energy efficient position in the line is Lanterne Rouge. Just saying… 😁
