Cycle Across America – Day 22

Wisdom to Dillon

65 miles / 2002ft climbed

Setting off

We set off from Wisdom to cycle along the one and only quiet road to Dillon. No chance of taking a wrong turn today. Still in the Rockies, we are surrounded by snow capped mountains every direction we looked.

Along the way, stopping in Jackson for a fabulous breakfast, some 18 miles into our ride today. The hotel in Jackson was a stunning old property with interesting decorations.

Scorching hot by midday, with no shade, we (I) struggled with the two long climbs today despite finding the rest of the ride within my capability. Once again I was helped to ease my load when Caroline pushed both her bike and mine at one point and when both John and Paul, despite the heat and having done each hill once already with their own heavy loads, each came back on separate occasions, having off loaded their panniers to enable them to help me with mine. The reduction in weight enabled me to eventually reach the top of each hill.

Heading uphill (slowly)
Superhero status
Some much needed help

After these two long uphill stretches, a late lunch stop and a long downhill stretch were equally welcome!

A little, much needed shade

A filling, much needed meal in the local bar, some good humour, lots of reflecting on another day in this incredible adventure and we were all ready for an early night.
