Cycle Across America – Day 34

Meadowlark Lake Lodge – Buffalo

43miles / 2,283 ft climb

The view from our cabin this morning

Having climbed so much yesterday, ‘downhill all the way’ was how we convinced ourselves today’s ride would be. We conveniently forgot the huge hill at the beginning of today’s ride and the other five, not insignificant hills that our Garmin’s identified. Collectively, these climbs got us to our highest point yet, 9,666ft at the Powder River Pass.

However today, in contrast with yesterday, between these hills there were long stretches of downhill and not simply more hills. This made for a welcome change and relieved our aching limbs for short periods.

Onwards and upwards!
Come on guys, keep pedalling!

We have met many people over the last couple of days who have added to the enjoyment of our journey. So many lovely connections made. There are lots of tales to tell and a whole blog to dedicate to them.

Arriving in Buffalo mid afternoon we sat outside The Occidental Hotel, a throwback to the Wild West where icons such as Calamity Jane and Buffalo Bill are reported to have stayed.

Then our well honed evening ritual of checking in to a motel, unpacking and re-packing our pannier bags, doing the laundry, charging all our gadgets, writing a blog, going in search of food and playing some cards before retiring to bed.

  1. This is such a fantastic ride. Loving all the stories and posts here and on Facebook. Also say a big hello and hugs to my bloody great mates Caroline, Julia, Paul and of course John.
Very envious of what you have seen so far and for what is still to come.

  2. What a beautiful view from your cabin. Nice to get those hills done. Hopefully a few flat days are on the horizon. XX

  3. Reading these blogs with great enthusiasm- what an experience torture yet amazing I’m sure. Some of the scenery photos have been absolutely amazing but the description of some of the rides : the raids, the weather , the climbs 😳😳😳 in awe of you all. This trip needs to be documented in a book – all proceeds to Parkinson’s research. Keep the blogs coming and keep going – amazing, amazing adventure. Superheroes.
