Cycle Across America – Day 55

Marshall to Redwood Falls

38 miles / 404ft climb

12th July 2025

With a number of route options today and none of us wanting a repeat of yesterday, we considered carefully our options and agreed to take the highway. For much of the route, the shoulder was wide enough and suitable for cycling on. However, where the shoulder disappeared we played ‘chicken’ with the traffic, weaving on and off the road onto the shoulder in response to cars coming from behind us. It was a short day, however in terms of mileage and as we are fitter, the actual cycling was not hard.

Arriving at our hotel, the late afternoon bugs were out in full force and a two mile cycle to a riverside diner saw us all bitten multiple times on the way there and on the way back. A good dinner, our appetites are huge but we still seem to lose weight. We are burning so many extra calories each day. As has become our routine, we play some card games and retire to bed. Despite the fact that we are getting used to the mileages we are doing daily, the heat and the headwinds sap our energy and there are no late nights for us!

We’re past the halfway mark!

  1. It’s not ideal catching up with this now you are on Day 87 and I might go to Day 87 now and work back but I am enjoying the journey and your articulate and easy reading writing style Alison xx
