Cycle Across America – Day 87

Port Colborne to Lockport (via Niagara Falls)

59 Miles / 817 ft climb

Ambling was the theme for today. With Lori and Steve back in Toronto, for the first time since our first week of this challenge, it is slightly strange to find, it’s just the two of us.

We enjoyed ambling our way along the Erie canal bike trail to Niagara Falls. I am not sure that ‘amble’ is the correct terminology for how we tackled our way through brunch but the sentiments were there as we enjoyed a long, leisurely sit down sharing a large stack of pancakes, only 10 miles into our ride.

Despite the most impressive thunderstorm last night, it remained hot and humid throughout the day and ambling was as much as we could muster throughout much of the day.

We reached Niagara Falls in the early afternoon. through a series of back streets that gave no indication of the incredible power and beauty that lay just beyond them.

We have been to Niagara Falls a few times previously but this phenomenal beauty and power cannot fail to impress like we were viewing it for the first time.

We ambled around Niagara as much as we could amidst the crowds with our laden bikes in tow. We had been advised not to leave them out of our sight even for a few minutes.

With all this ambling it should have come as no surprise that by 4pm, we still had to cross the lake and get through back into America, through border control and then cycle another 33 miles to our accommodation in New York State.

Our ambling was over! We had to cycle with a little more determination to get to our accommodation before dark but we just managed it.

The route was stunningly beautiful today, along the canal and a we will continue along this path tomorrow as we head for Rochester, further into Nee York State.

Having planned our exact route and booked 75 nights of accommodation before even leaving the UK and having organised the last ten nights a couple of weeks ago, we are now having to decide our exact route to the Atlantic Coast and begin to book our accommodation for the remainder of our challenge.

We have just booked the next two nights in Rochester. We will cycle 65 miles tomorrow to get there and have booked both bikes in for a service, replacement or repairs to various worn parts on our ‘rest day’ the following day. We can spent the remainder of our ‘rest day’ preparing for the rest of the days of this adventure.

  1. You both look fab and so tanned! Can’t believe you’re on the home straight! Much love to you both xx

  2. Beautiful pictures of Niagara Falls. As you say, even if you’ve visited several times before they can never fail to impress. I also enjoyed the video with the rainbow 🌈. Enjoy your well deserved rest day in Rochester (after tomorrow’s ride)

  3. We continue to follow you and cheer you on! We don’t expect you to remember us at all – the ‘two strangers’ you met in Ten Sleeps, Wyoming – back in June! Your journey is astounding, and we just wanted to let you know we continue to read your blog and keep you in our prayers :) Best of luck to you in this final stretch.

We continue to be amazed that people are interested in what we are doing and thank you for your support. It’s a beautiful day in New York State today as we follow the canal all the way to Rochester. Seems a very long way from Ten Sleep! Best wishes. Alison & John

  4. I have nothing but total admiration for the feat you are so dedicatedly accomplishing. You’ll be cycling in your sleep when you get home! Is it too soon to ask what you’re planning for next year? 🤔 Xx
