Cycle Across America – Day 91

Newark to Baldwinsville

50 miles / 1000ft climb

In anticipation of the forecast of another blisteringly hot afternoon, we started early to get a few miles completed during the cooler morning hours. We needn’t have worried about the sunshine but more the rainstorms that circled us threateningly all afternoon. The sky was dark and for the first time since we left Astoria it was actually a little chilly by the time we reached our destination, the lovely little town of Baldwinsville.

We escaped much of the rain, thankfully as we wound our way along a mixture of bike trails and roads to get another 50 miles closer to our destination.

We are still in New York State and spent much of our evening try to decide the best route over the mountains that lie between us and the Atlantic. I’m reminded of one of our three boys’ favourite children’s book by Michael Rosen, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ with a slight variation to the original words it seems ‘we can’t go around them, we can’t go under them, we’ll have to go over them!’ We are just looking for the least painful way of doing so!

We are the only ones on the trail!

  1. They look like beaver ponds – do you spot much wildlife?
We’re just nipping back to Cheltenham for my neurology appointment – hooray!
Keep the steep climbs as short as possible. Long zigzags might be less arduous?
Stay safe, Phil and Sue xxx

  2. You’ve got these mountains. You have climbed way more and endured much harder trials over the last 4000+ miles. That’s before we even start on your Parkinson’s journey over the last decade.

The mountains remain the same and won’t change. Your attitude towards them is what you control. When you are up and over them you will be stronger again.

    Stay safe.
