Cycling Across America – Day 13

Walla Walla to Dayton

29 Miles / 1473ft climb

An early start as the extreme heat and strong winds that were forecast for the afternoon were not conducive to enjoyable cycling. The plan was to get a few fast miles under our belts before it became oppressively hot. As ever, the best laid plans…..

From the time the four of us first started cycling together in 2017, we have seen ‘road closed’ signs as a warning for motorists but a challenge to cyclists to find a way through. This morning was no exception.

Except ‘road closed’ turned out to mean ‘road closed’ to everyone, not just motorists.

Everyone except us of course…….

We had continued past the initial warning signs and a diversion option.

When mile or so later, we literally reached the end of the road.

Not deterred, we walked and pushed and tentatively rode on what no-one could reasonably call a road.

A somewhat slower start than anticipated, once we reached the end of the roadworks, we made uneventful, good progress over the rest of the miles to Dayton.

A shorter day than we might have expected and miraculously, we arrived at the only bar in town, just in time to watch the Champion’s League Final. Funny how these things work out!

  1. Keeping up with the tradition of not being deterred by the “road closed” signs. Glad it worked out well in the end. I’m guessing the detours are mega in the US. Well to you all, glad you got to see the final xx
