Cycle Across America – Day 46

Midland to Murdo

36 Miles / 1,654ft climb

Leaving at 6.30 am, we had a lovely cooling breeze to start our journey. By 9am this had turned into a strong headwind accompanied by a temperature in excess of 30° degrees and rapidly rising.

The undulating ride I had been anticipating felt like it was continually uphill as the headwinds ensured that time spent going downhill brought little respite.

We moved into our third time zone since we started this adventure 46 days ago. Somewhere en route between Midland and Murdo today, we switched from Mountain to Central time but still managed to reach Murdo by midday. Thank good need we had a shorter day today.

Arriving at our hotel, it was well before check-in time, but we met with the most helpful receptionist and within a few minutes had ice cold bottles of water, two ground floor rooms that we could keep our bikes in and immediate access to them. Heaven!

A shower, snooze, out for food, a sit by the pool and we could easily be fooled into thinking we are on holiday, at least until tomorrow morning at some yet to be determined hour.

  1. How nice to get in early with access to a pool 😅. Are you ever going to have a day off?! You’re all doing amazingly well. 💪🏻👏🙌xx

  2. Sounds like a tough day, headwinds are the pits! I can’t believe how far you’ve cycled, well done! Loving the blog xx

  3. The ‘plan’ was to set off by 6 am and arrive by midday, according to the previous blog. You got an extra half an hour in bed and still hit your target! A new time zone too.

You earned the wins at the hotel!

    1. Please tell me this all becomes a little less challenging soon and that there is some kind of oasis with melons and pineapples and brightly coloured things and shade!
Full ( FULL) of admiration Sharon xxx
