Cycle Across America – Day 48

Kennebec to Fort Thomson

33miles / 797ft climb

Gerry, our motel host announced just as we were leaving this morning that it looked like a storm was approaching. We spent a few minutes debating whether to stay until the storm had passed or carry on regardless.

We were feeling brave, possibly mad, strong and fast after six weeks on the road and convinced ourselves that we could out-cycle any storm!

Thankfully we didn’t need to and except for the now customary strong winds of South Dakota, it was an easy ride. The road was quiet, and gently turned us into and away from the wind at will and with little en route to distract us, by early afternoon, we arrived at Fort Thomson, following the Missouri River for the final few miles.

Our accommodation tonight sits in the Crow Creek Indian Reservation. The town of Fort Thomson, with a population of just over 1,200 is the largest on the reservation and dates back to 1864. It serves as the headquarters of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe.

With nearly 50 days on the road, it never ceases to amaze us that we never have two similar days. Each day brings new scenery, road types, traffic, experiences, facilities, people, cultures and each of these add value to the incredible journey we are immersed in.

More than a little windy!
