Wessington Springs to Huron
36 Miles / 292ft climb
Before leaving Wessington Springs, we took a quick look at Shakespeare’s Garden and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. Neither of which we expected to find in South Dakota. They have absolutely no link to the area, so it truly is just the whim of a local who built the house, employed a master thatcher from England to thatch it and spent a real labour of love developing the beautiful gardens.

A short ride again today but with three notably challenges.
- The blistering heat
- 6km stretch of gravel
- Trying to outrun the storm

We survived the heat, we survived the gravel (just) and the storm never quite caught us up.
Our stay at the hotel started with washing every item of clothing we own. Desperately needed! There are only so many times we can wash our kit in the shower with us before it really needs a ‘proper’ wash it will be such a treat to put on clean dry kit in the morning!
We thoroughly enjoyed a proper meal out, at last! Steaks all round with cheesecake for desert. Washed down with a bottle of wine. We are all beginning to look a little leaner. It is hard to consume as many calories as we are burning and harder to try to find some with adequate nutritional content.
A game of cards as has become our evening ritual and a quick check of tomorrow’s route and the weather forecast and we’re ready to do it all again tomorrow (except the gravel)!

It’s amazing how far you have travelled and really have never managed to find adequate healthy nutrition to support an super active and healthy lifestyle – hate to think what rural obesity, diabetic and hypertensive levels are in “rural” USA
Agree! Not unexpected but still shocking/sad. Hi Jed x
Great to do a bit of laundry and eat a decent meal. Simple pleasures 😃. Not long now until a day off xx
I’m glad that the three challenges turned out to be nothing of the sort. No surprise, exactly what I would expect from all of you now. Some decent food too! All round, winner winner, chicken dinner!*
*Or steak, as it turned out.
