Cycle Across America – 63

Clam Lake to Park Falls

31 miles / 943ft climb

Another short day to arrive at our cabin by the lake by late afternoon. Another beautiful location. Minneapolis may be the ‘State of 10,000 lakes’ but Wisconsin has its fair share of beautiful lakes too from what we have seen to date.

We stopped twice along the route, once for a long, leisurely lunch and once when we were flagged down by Molly who had heard about us and wanted to wish us well, give us a hug and have her photograph taken with us.

‘Stay safe‘ is the message we receive from almost everyone we meet. We have learned that motorbike riders convey this ‘stay safe’ message to each other whilst on the road by extending their left arm and pointing the two finger peace signal downwards as they pass each other. We are often extended the same courtesy by the groups of motorbikers who pass us by. Preferable to the enthusiastic loud honking of their horns that we received as a group passed us by the other day and scared the living daylights out of us!

We passed two cyclists today. Except for the bike trail as we rode into Minneapolis last week, which was full of urban cyclists, it is still such a rarity to see other cyclists on the road. They are following a similar route to us over the next few days, so we may see them again.

Both our lunch and supper venues played loud Country and Western music throughout which I thoroughly embraced as part of the American experience. John is much less enthusiastic about this than I am!

  1. We briefly ran into Paul and John during your stop in ‘Ten Sleeps’ Wyoming, and we have been reading/watching your blog each day since then. I’m in awe of you all, and we will keep watching and cheering from Iowa!!! Take care! I hope you are finding your journey filled with lots of love and encouragement.
