Cycle Across America – Day 78

We spent the day, our rest day around Wolf Lake. I got up whilst everyone else was still asleep and walked half an hour to the snack shack where I ordered breakfast and sat quietly enjoying watching the world go by. I hadn’t realised a couple of hours had passed and the others were now up. I returned and had a second breakfast with them before David set off on his long drive back to Hamilton. Caroline, Paul and John then spent a couple of hours assessing the extent of the problem Caroline had been having with her gears towards the end of yesterday. The consensus was that it is essentially the same problem John has with his gear shifter. In the absence of an immediate replacement part or bike shop, it will be Caroline’s turn to climb the hills with only two gears tomorrow and there are a few hills to tackle.

Whilst out on the porch, we got chatting to some ladies who walked past. A couple of hours later, we found ourselves sitting in their garden looking over the lake, enjoying a glass of wine and a chat with Barb, Kathy and Terri and then spending a lovely hour on their pontoon on the lake.

By the time we got back to our cabin, we hadn’t done much if any of the route planning or accommodation hunting we had intended to do. We had however had a lovely and fun afternoon.

Planning……

We have our routes and accommodation booked for another eleven days but the days are flying past and we would like to be a little more organised….

Maybe tomorrow?!

  1. Hey, Jake from Detroit here. Thank you all so much for the help on the trail yesterday. I would’ve been fumbling around for quite awhile longer without your help. I really appreciate you keeping me on time, I was able to get to my campsite and set up just before dark. Well wishes and safe travels going forward, good luck my eastward-bound friends!

  2. Sounds like a great rest day. Shame about Caroline’s gears – hopefully sorted soon. Those bikes have taken a hammering! Xx

  3. Looks like a proper rest day ❤️. You look relaxed and refuelled mentally & physically with some decent food at last. Beautiful scenery and more welcoming friends. So nice to hear David joined you.
Onwards with restored energy, love to you all xxxxx

  4. You’re all doing so brilliantly and coping with some really tough challenges like the gear failure and highway traffic. I’m in awe every morning reading your blog. You are amazing, both physically and mentally so strong. The stories of the friendly and generous people you have met warm the heart too. So very proud of you, Alison and team. I shall miss waking every morning to your blog email when you finish this fantastic journey. Sending love and favourable tail winds your way. Nici xxx
